The Lords Valley Country Club Sports Facilities:

Golf, Tennis, and Waterfront Through  the Years

By Marcia Yawitz, Tod Shapiro and the Communications Committee Staff

The Lords Valley Country Club (LVCC) has maintained excellent golf, tennis, and waterfront facilities since its inception, always with an overall goal of providing a first-rate experience for its members and guests. The Club’s facilities date back to the days of the Brewster estate and later in the 1960s when it was owned and fully subsidized by Western Heritage. Western Heritage offered the Club and its facilities to the community, but the community declined to purchase it, and it became a private, not-for-profit entity located within Hemlock Farms.

The golf course is the Club’s “crown jewel,” and LVCC has never stopped trying to improve and refine the golf experience over the years.  In the early 1970s the course had only 9 holes, and players had to double back in order to complete a full round.

Today, the expanded par 72, 18-hole championship course is considered one of the best in the Poconos.   The course’s rating is 71.2 from the blue tees and the slope rating is 129. Each September, the Pocono Professional Golf Series, which emphasizes the quality of the course, is held here. In addition, LVCC has reciprocal relationships with three other clubs in the area.

The Club’s  membership includes top golfers who relish the challenging course, but in fact most of our members are casual golfers who play for the fun, camaraderie and wonderful natural setting!  It is not unusual to see red foxes, black bear, deer and turkeys during a game. Members have the option of entering both inter and intra-club tournaments or just playing for fun. Many of our members’ children take lessons and compete in junior tournaments and outings. There is a beautiful landscaped driving range with chipping area and practice trap, and a fine putting green, all of which are free for members and their guests. Lessons are available from the four Club pros.   The Club has been cited for its sound environmental management of the grounds, and the Club is proud that its course is one of the few nationwide that has been recognized by the Audubon International as a Certified Cooperative Sanctuary for avian wildlife. The course superintendent has a degree in agronomy from Penn State, and takes classes each year to hone his skills. Golf clinics are offered twice weekly, free of charge.

The Club also has a first-rate tennis facility highlighted by 10 Har-Tru courts and a state-of-the-art tennis center and shop with full services for members and guests. Responding to the tremendous growth in tennis over the years, the Club has expanded from two to ten courts, with a switch in the 80s from all-weather to Har-Tru greatly reducing the wear on our players’ knees, backs, and muscles. Utilizing both phone and internet, the tennis staff coordinates a lively schedule of singles and doubles games so that everybody has a suitable game for the best possible experience. Open tennis, team tennis and tennis tournaments have always been an important part of the Club’s activities. Lessons are available from the tennis pro. As with golf, tennis clinics are offered twice weekly free of charge.

LVCC’s Waterfront includes unmatched access and scenic views of the golf course, Hemlock Lake and the beautiful Pocono Mountain vistas, making it perfect for boating, swimming, pool-side bridge, canasta, and mah-jongg and taking in the sun and sights. The 120 x 40-foot heated pool, with its surrounding lounge chair-lined patio, remains one of the main gathering places for Club members, their families and guests.   The upper dining patio, with its magnificent views, is an ideal place for informal lunches and social events.

The waterfront director and his professional staff run numerous pool-side activities for adults and children, including Bingo, aerobic water programs, kid’s races, and many other fun activities, especially the inflatable water slide beloved of LVCC’s children. The Club maintains an intrepid fleet of paddleboats, sunfish, kayaks, and rowboats, all carefully supervised. Back in the 1970s, the highlights of Sunday afternoons were the sailboat races. Members would compete in their sunfish around a prescribed course in Hemlock Lake.
